What is Acupuncture and How Does It Work?
Acupuncture entails the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body to activate its innate healing processes. This time-honoured technique aims to balance the flow of energy, or “Qi” (pronounced “chee”), which is believed to travel through pathways called meridians. By targeting these points, acupuncture helps alleviate pain, reduce stress, and enhance overall well-being.
At Family Physiotherapy Clinic, the ancient practice of Traditional Chinese Acupuncture provides holistic treatments. According to TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), acupoints are situated along meridians through which the body’s vital energy, or “Qi,” flows. When the flow of Qi is obstructed or disrupted, it can cause pain and illness. By stimulating these acupoints, acupuncture helps restore the balance of Qi, promoting natural healing processes. Research suggests that acupuncture may stimulate nerves, muscles, and connective tissues, boosting blood flow and triggering the release of the body’s natural painkillers.

What Does an Acupuncture Treatment Look Like?
Curious about what to expect during an acupuncture session at Family Physiotherapy Clinic? Here’s a step-by-step guide to walk you through the process:
- Initial Consultation: Before your first acupuncture session, you’ll have an in-depth consultation with one of our experienced acupuncturists. They’ll discuss your medical history, current health concerns, and specific symptoms you’re experiencing. This conversation helps us create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your unique needs.
- Preparation: Once your treatment plan is established, you’ll be guided to a comfortable treatment room. You may be asked to change into a gown or adjust your clothing to expose the areas where the needles will be placed. Our serene and calming environment is designed to help you relax and feel at ease.
- Needle Placement: During the session, our acupuncturist will gently insert very fine, sterile needles into specific acupoints on your body. The number and location of needles depend on your individual treatment plan. Most people feel minimal to no discomfort as the needles are inserted. You might feel a slight tingling sensation or a dull ache, which indicates the Qi is being stimulated.
- Relaxation Period: After the needles are in place, you’ll lie still and relax for about 15 to 30 minutes. Many patients find this period deeply relaxing and may even fall asleep. This time allows the needles to work their magic, promoting the flow of Qi and triggering your body’s natural healing processes.
- Needle Removal: Once the session is complete, our acupuncturist will carefully remove the needles. This process is usually painless. The areas where the needles were inserted might feel slightly tender or tingly, but these sensations typically fade quickly.
- Post-Treatment Guidance: After your treatment, our acupuncturist will provide you with any necessary aftercare instructions. This might include recommendations for hydration, rest, or gentle exercises to enhance the benefits of your acupuncture session.
Does Acupuncture Hurt?
A common concern for many considering acupuncture is whether the treatment is painful. At Family Physiotherapy Clinic, we want to put your mind at ease. The good news is acupuncture generally does not hurt. The needles used are very thin and much finer than those used for injections or drawing blood.
When the needles are inserted, you may experience a slight pinch or a tingling sensation, but these feelings are typically very brief. Many patients describe the sensations as mild and often find the process to be relaxing. Acupuncture in Edmonton aims to activate specific points on the body and encourage healing and balance, and our skilled acupuncturist, Xiaohan (Han) Xie ensures your comfort throughout the session.
In fact, many people report feeling more relaxed and at ease during and after their acupuncture treatments. Some even experience a sense of well-being and calmness akin to a deep meditative state.
At Family Physiotherapy Clinic, your comfort is our priority. We create a soothing environment and use gentle techniques to make your acupuncture experience as pleasant and beneficial as possible.
